Saving vs Spending
Spending lets us use money for something now. Saving keeps money aside for a later purpose. Both are useful. Children do not need to save every cent, but they benefit from learning that money used today is no longer available for another choice tomorrow.
Give money different jobs
When money arrives, invite your child to decide what portion is for spending and what portion is for a goal. Younger children may use labelled containers; older children can write a simple plan. There is no single split that suits every age or family.
The purpose is to practise making a choice before spending. Even a small amount saved regularly can help a child see progress and understand delayed rewards.
Make trade-offs visible
If a child spends R30 on a treat, that R30 cannot also go towards a toy they are saving for. Use a real example without implying that the treat was wrong. Ask whether the child is happy with the choice and what it means for the goal.
For bigger purchases, compare the immediate benefit with the future benefit. Children can decide that something is worth buying now, provided they understand the consequence and stay within agreed limits.
Plan for flexibility
A saving goal can change, and a spending plan can include fun. Review the plan together rather than treating it as a permanent contract. If the child spends more quickly than expected, help them learn from the result and adjust next time.
Parents can model the balance by explaining why they save for a future cost while still budgeting for family activities. This shows that planning is not about never enjoying money; it is about choosing deliberately.
Growing money confidence, one step at a time
Children build financial understanding through repeated, age-appropriate practice. Keep the conversation calm, adapt examples to your family and treat mistakes as opportunities to learn.
