The Five Money Skills

Money education can feel like a long list of topics: pocket money, budgeting, saving, banking, credit, generosity and investing. CubVest organises the learning around five connected skills: Earn, Save, Spend, Give and Invest. The framework helps families see that healthy money decisions involve more than one action.

    Earn: understand value and effort

Earning helps children explore how people exchange time, effort, knowledge or services for money. Age-appropriate examples can include understanding different jobs, practising a skill or discussing how a product is made. Paid chores are one family choice, not the only way to teach earning.

Save and Spend: balance now and later

Saving connects money to future goals. Spending is the act of choosing what to buy and deciding whether the price and timing make sense. Children learn these skills together when they compare an immediate purchase with a longer-term goal.

    Give: connect money with values

Giving allows children to think about generosity, community and what matters to them. It should be voluntary and appropriate to the child’s circumstances. Time, help and care can also be forms of giving; money is not the only contribution.

Invest: understand long-term growth and risk

Investing introduces assets, uncertainty, time horizons and the possibility of loss. It should not be presented as guaranteed growth or a quick way to become wealthy. A pretend portfolio can introduce the ideas before any real product is considered.

    Bring the skills together

A child might earn money from a safe, agreed activity, save part for a goal, spend part on a planned item, choose whether to give a little and learn what investing means for longer-term goals. The exact choices depend on age and family context.

The framework is a guide, not a rigid formula. Families can begin with one skill and add others as children are ready.

Growing money confidence, one step at a time

Children build financial understanding through repeated, age-appropriate practice. Keep the conversation calm, adapt examples to your family and treat mistakes as opportunities to learn.

At CubVest, we connect five money skills: Earn, Save, Spend, Give and Invest. You do not need to teach them all at once. Begin with one useful decision and build from there.
