What Is Inflation?
Inflation means that prices across the economy rise over time. When this happens, the same amount of money may buy fewer goods and services than before. A loaf of bread, transport fare or school item may cost more later even if the number printed on a banknote stays the same.
Use a familiar shopping example
Imagine R20 used to buy two of a particular item, but later the same items cost R24. The money has not disappeared, but it buys less of that item than before. This is a simple illustration; actual prices vary by product and place.
Inflation does not mean every price rises by the same amount. Some prices may stay steady or fall while others rise more quickly. The official inflation rate measures a broad basket, not the exact experience of every household.
Connect inflation to saving goals
If a child is saving for an item that becomes more expensive, the original target may need to change. Check the current price as the goal approaches and update the plan. This is a useful lesson in flexibility.
Interest on savings may help, depending on the rate and account, but the outcome depends on the product and inflation. Do not promise that every savings account will keep pace with rising prices.
Focus on practical choices
Families can compare prices, plan purchases, reduce waste and review budgets when costs change. These steps do not control inflation, but they can help a household make thoughtful choices with the money available.
Avoid making children anxious about every price change. Explain that prices move for many reasons and that families adjust plans over time.
Growing money confidence, one step at a time
Children build financial understanding through repeated, age-appropriate practice. Keep the conversation calm, adapt examples to your family and treat mistakes as opportunities to learn.
